Telangana & Andhra Pradesh Brace for Heavy Rains: Flooding, Disruptions & Tragedy

Heavy rains lashed Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, leading to widespread flooding, road disruptions, and tragic incidents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for several districts, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Telangana Batters by Heavy Rains

The state of Telangana bore the brunt of the heavy rains, with the capital city Hyderabad witnessing significant waterlogging and tree fall incidents. In a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of children, the administration ordered all schools in Hyderabad district to be closed on September 2nd due to the forecast of heavy rains.

Impact on Transportation

The incessant rainfall led to disruption of railway services. Six trains were canceled and nine were diverted due to waterlogging on the tracks at various locations. A railway track between Kesamudram and Mahabubabad was inundated, halting train services between Vijayawada, Warangal, and Delhi.

Officials On High Alert

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy held an emergency review with ministers, officials, and elected members, directing them to take immediate relief measures in flood-affected areas. He ordered district collectors, SPs, revenue, irrigation, and municipal officials to conduct field visits in the flood-hit habitations and instructed all important department officials to cancel their leaves and join relief and rescue operations immediately in the rain-ravaged districts. The officials of the emergency wings were also instructed to send regular updates on the heavy rains to the Chief Minister’s Office.

Andhra Pradesh Faced Similar Challenges

In Andhra Pradesh, heavy rains caused widespread flooding, leading to the overflow of the Pulichintala project dam. Several houses and cars were inundated in the Rama Krishna Puram area of Vijayawada, prompting rescue operations by police and NDRF teams.

The Aftermath of the Rains

The heavy rains brought devastation to both states, causing loss of life and widespread damage. The situation highlights the need for better disaster preparedness and robust infrastructure to mitigate the impact of such events in the future.
