Actor John Ashton, best known for his role as the by-the-book detective in the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, has passed away. He was 76 years old. His publicist, Alan Somers, confirmed the news to CBS News on Sunday. Ashton died on Thursday in Ft. Collins, Colorado, after a long battle with cancer. He leaves behind a legacy of great performances in a career spanning over five decades, during which he acted in nearly 100 movies and television series.

Ashton was born on February 22, 1948, in Springfield, Massachusetts, and grew up in Enfield, Connecticut. He pursued his passion for acting after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California. He began his acting career in 1973 with his debut in the film “The Psychopath,” which marked the beginning of a prolific and successful career.

The family has requested that anyone wishing to make a donation in Ashton’s memory do so to Pathways Hospice Care, an organization dedicated to providing compassionate end-of-life care.
