Shimla: Himachal Pradesh BJP President Rajiv Bindal resigned from his post on Wednesday within four and a half months of his appointment. Bindal said that he is resigning because he wants to ensure that proper investigation is done in the alleged corruption case. In his resignation letter to BJP President JP Nadda, Bindal has said that he is resigning on moral grounds as some people are dragging the name of the party in the alleged corruption committed by the state health director.
The State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Health Services Director Ajay Kumar Gupta on 20 May. An arrest has been made on the scam related to the PPE kit. The arrest came after an 43-second audio recording of him went viral in which he was allegedly asking a person to bribe Rs five lakh. An official said that after the arrest, Gupta was suspended by the state government.
Bindal, who became the state BJP president on January 18 after resigning as the Speaker of the Assembly, said that he resigned so that a proper investigation could be done in the matter without any pressure. The BJP said that the party president has accepted Bindal’s resignation. Bindal said that the BJP has nothing to do with the alleged corruption. Also, the state government immediately took steps and took action against the health officer.
Without naming anyone, he said that dragging BJP’s name in the case would be an injustice to the party as the party distributed more than five lakh food packets, 1.10 lakh ration kits and more than 30 lakh masks during the lockdown. Reacting to the resignation, the Congress said that ‘the BJP could not free the health department from corruption even during the corona virus epidemic’. The state Congress demanded the current judge of the High Court to conduct an inquiry into the case as it was not confident in the investigation being conducted by the Vigilance Bureau.
